It was 1996.
Like every other year, Natalie and her husband sat down to go over their supplemental insurance benefits. Early in her education career, Natalie didn’t expect to encounter a life-changing diagnosis.
Still, she purchased an AF™ Limited Benefit Cancer Insurance policy from American Fidelity.
“I signed up because my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer, and it freaked me out a little bit,” she said. “I wanted to be prepared in case something was to happen.”
After purchasing the policy, Natalie continued to visit the doctor for her annual mammogram. And for years, she received good news. But in 2017—two decades after obtaining the cancer policy—she faced the unexpected.
“They called me back in, and it was cancer.”
The Costs of Care
As Natalie began chemotherapy and radiation, she soon faced the related out-of-pocket medical expenses.
“Honestly, I had no idea how much cancer treatment was going to cost,” she said. “One day, I asked to see a bill. It was pages and pages and pages.”
Thankfully, Natalie’s cancer insurance policy helped relieve some of that financial burden.
“It was nice to have that check to pay for out-of-pocket expenses that you’re not expecting—from the anesthesiologist, the surgeon, the radiologist, and lab work,” she said.
An Aid in Recovery
Natalie believes her cancer insurance helped relieve financial stressors so she could focus on getting well.
“When you have cancer, you have a lot of things to worry about. We can’t get better if we’re so stressed out about finances,” she said.
“Knowing that’s taken care of is part of your recovery. It’s one less thing you have to stress about, and one less thing you have to fight for.”
Focus on Health
Today, Natalie has completed her cancer treatment and remains an advocate for annual wellness checks and diagnostic screenings.
“You have to be really diligent in taking care of yourself,” she said. “In a year’s time, I was fine and then I had cancer.”
American Fidelity is proud to be a part of Natalie’s journey. And if your life takes an unexpected turn, we want to be there for you, too.
